They are a special kind of texture that allow you to add surface detail such as bumps, grooves, and scratches to a model which catch the light as if they are represented by real geometry. For example, you might want to show a surface which has grooves and screws or rivets across the surface, like an aircraft hull.

One way to do this would be to model these details as geometry, as shown below.

On the right you can see the polygons required to make up the detail of a single screwhead. Over a large model with lots of fine surface detail this would require a very high number of polygons to be drawn.

To avoid this, we should use a normal map to represent the fine surface detail, and a lower resolution polygonal surface for the larger shape of the model. If we instead represent this detail with a bump map, the surface geometry can become much simpler, and the detail is represented as a texture which modulates how light reflects off the surface.

This is something modern graphics hardware can do extremely fast.

5 Must Know Tips With Bump/Normal Maps (Blender 2.8)

Your metal surface can now be a low-poly flat plane, and the screws, rivets, grooves and scratches will catch the light and appear to have depth because of the texture. In modern game development art pipelines, artists will use their 3D modelling applications to generate normal maps based on very high resolution source models. The normal maps are then mapped onto a lower-resolution game-ready version of the model, so that the original high-resolution detail is rendered using the normalmap.

Bump mapping is a relatively old graphics technique, but is still one of the core methods required to create detailed realistic realtime graphics. Bump Maps are also commonly referred to as Normal Maps or Height Mapshowever these terms have slightly different meanings which will be explained below. Perhaps the most basic example would be a model where each surface polygon is lit simply according to the surface angles relative to the light. In the image above, the left cylinder has basic flat shading, and each polygon is shaded according to its relative angle to the light source.

The model on the right has the same number of polygons as the model on the left, however the shading appears smooth - the lighting across the polygons gives the appearance of a curved surface.

Why is this? The reason is that the surface normal at each point used for reflecting light gradually varies across the width of the polygon, so that for any given point on the surface, the light bounces as if that surface was curved and not the flat constant polygon that it really is.

Viewed as a 2D diagram, three of the surface polygons around the outside of the flat-shaded cylinder would look like this:. The surface normals are represented by the orange arrows. These are the values used to calculate how light reflects off the surface, so you can see that light will respond the same across the length of each polygon, because the surface normals point in the same direction. For the smooth shaded cylinder however, the surface normals vary across the flat polygons, as represented here:.

The normal directions gradually change across the flat polygon surface, so that the shading across the surface gives the impression of a smooth curve as represented by the greeen line. This does not affect the actual polygonal nature of the mesh, only how the lighting is calculated on the flat surfaces. This apparent curved surface is not really present, and viewing the faces at glancing angles will reveal the true nature of the flat polygons, however from most viewing angles the cylinder appears to have a smooth curved surface.

Using this basic smooth shading, the data determining the normal direction is actually only stored per vertexso the changing values across the surface are interpolated from one vertex to the next. In the diagram above, the red arrows indicate the stored normal direction at each vertex, and the orange arrows indicate examples of the interpolated normal directions across the area of the polygon.A normal map is an image that stores a direction at each pixel. These directions are called normals. The red, green, and blue channels of the image are used to control the direction of each pixel's normal.

A normal map is commonly used to fake high-resolution details on a low-resolution model.

Each pixel of the map stores the surface slope of the original high-res mesh at that point. This creates the illusion of more surface detail or better curvature. In time this info will be condensed onto the wiki. Normal maps can be made in 2D painting software, without modeling in 3D. You can convert photo textures into normal maps, create node-based graphs to compile normal maps, or even hand-paint them with brushes. Normal maps created in 2D work best when tiled across 3D models that have a uniform direction in tangent spacelike terrains or walls. On these models the UVs are not rotated; they are all facing roughly in the same direction.

To get seamless lighting, rotated UVs require specific gradients in the normal mapwhich can only be created properly by baking a 3D model. A normal map baked from a high-poly mesh will often be better than one sampled from a texture, since you're rendering from a highly detailed surface. The normal map pixels will be recreating the surface angles of the high-poly mesh, resulting in a very believable look.

A hybrid approach can be used by baking large and mid-level details from a high-poly mesh, and combining these with painted or photo-sourced "fine detail" for fabric weave, scratches, pores, etc.If you happen to be new to the baking process in Blender see the end of the article problem 5!

Hi, Aidy Burrows here, bump map creation can itself be a bumpy ride and as for normal maps? Who can say what normal really is anyway?! Well, actually in this context probably a mathematician could easily tell us BUT! Here are our default new image settings below, notice the unchecked 32 bit float checkbox meaning our new image will be 8 bit.

If we leave everything as is and bake with this default lower bit depth, we can get problems such as these…. Notice the strange swirly mosaic tiled look to the middle cube. We are asking a lot of our textures here though seeing how the object is so clean, smooth, defined and shiny.

Above is that same central cube from before but instead of a very low roughness setting of just 0. On top we have the image node selected in the shader editor and below the normal map texture being used in the image editor. This is what the cube was using earlier to show the 8 bit texture problem. The answer is — NO!

Which means that the image is not being treated as just data, so we need to counteract that. The thing to bare in mind there is that in order for this normal map to shade properly we need to explicitly tell Blender in the shader editor that this image should NOT be treated as a typical color image. You might be wondering WHY are they altered? Well, very basically this is because it makes the texture more useable for the monitor and more pleasing and intuitive to the human eye.

If we want to control this manually ourselves we can simply add a gamma node set to 0. One final note on this which may change down the line if this is a bug!

Whatever the case, what follows here should be the most robust and consistent way of working with 32 bit images to get what we need. Remember as mentioned before if we want to control this manually ourselves we can simply add a gamma node set to 2. Again I suspect this bug may well be sorted any moment.

As we know, for an ideal texture we need the full bit depth. But what images can we save to and still expect to keep all that data in good shape? I did some further tests and noted some filesizes below.Although normal maps or 'local maps' to give them their Doom 3 name ideally should be generated by rendering an incredibly high resolution three dimensional object into 2D, this approach may be seen as being over the top for the more casual mapper or texture artist who just want to enjoy creating new texture assets for Doom 3 or other 'next Gen' games without the need to go 'hardcore' and learn a 3D application.

If you're one of these chaps then this 'tutorial' is for you. Having said that, this tutorial isn't a step-by-step guide - a "how to make a normal map" run through as it assumes you have at least a basic understanding of the photo editing application you have access to in order to create the objects required for the bump map process.

It's not a technical thesis nor is it about passing photographs through the various filters either, you don't need instructions on how to do that; in fact, this tutorial will highlight why you shouldn't do that, or at the very least why you don't get the results you'd expect from photographs.

What you'll see outlined below is the best method currently available for producing normal maps from 2D art work, highlighting the things you should be aware of as you work and along the way helping you to understand what the various tools and utilities are actually doing in the process. The basic process is to use a grey scale image, created specifically for this purpose - to create a normal map - and pass that through either the ATI tga2dot3 stand alone tool, the nVidia photoshop, the 'Gimp' plug-in or any other 3rd party normal map generator.

Each of these app's basically converts the grey scale image into the equivalent DOT3 colour counterpart. Depending on which tool is used varying amounts of control can be had over the resulting normal map in terms of how strong the bump effect is. What we're going to be creating is a door similar to the photograph opposite. The easiest thing to do would be to convert the photograph to grey scale and then pass that through one of the bump tools to get a pretty quick normal map There is a problem with doing this; the tools can't really get any 'genuine' height information from the image other than the very obvious stuff - the gap in the door and shadows caused by the presence of the hinges and so on.

It doesn't matter how much you alter the 'emboss' height values in the bump tools interface, you simply can't get 'clean' height information from the photograph so the end result in game is not particularly good; it's essentially all 'surface' and no 'depth'. By doing this all that's basically happened to the image is that it's been embossed because although 'we' can tell what the image is and what it's supposed to look, the tools can't.

Design note: it's worth pointing out here that the tools are effectively 'embossing' the image in exactly the same way you would normally do to any type of image if you wanted to create the illusion of 'faked' depth like a beveled edge. The only real difference is the output, it's colour orientation is 'normalised' Red, Green, Blue. This is in essence where the problem lies; not the emboss aspect, but instead how 'literal' the tools are being in their interpretation of the tone and colour values interpreted from the image we're in grey scale don't forget.

Whilst we can look at that image and 'see' the three dimensionality of the objects and fittings because we know what they're supposed to look like which for us is helped by of the play of light and shadow on the objectsthe tools can't, they have no way of making that distinction. All they know is 'black' creates depth and 'white' creates height, giving tonal differences between the two.

It's important to understand what the tools are doing in relation to the images you pass through them, once you understand this you understand why you can never get the result you think you should get from an unprocessed photograph passed through them.

Essentially the information a photograph contains is 'incorrect' for the tools to use, we use 'black' for any number of visual interpretations of any given scene, the tools only understand 'black' as signifying 'depth' relative to neighbouring colour or tone. As an example look at that image above again and take note of two areas; the ventilation grills and the hinges.

It's easy to spot the shadow on the hinges, which for us emphasise the height of the metalwork. But if you look at it again and note the colour tones of the hinge, although darker they're not strikingly different to the tones of the rest of metalwork around them.

The normal map tools see this slight tonal difference and the 'black' of shadow and it interprets literally by pushing those areas back into the normal map, it doesn't see it as ' shadow ' but instead ' depth' and so it behaves accordingly.

The same happens to the vents.So I am in the works of making assets for a 2D demo and I discovered that you can use normal maps to make 2D sprites react to lights in Unity. This is really cool and would add a lot of depth and atmosphere to the demo. I also am using the I don't think having a gameObject for each sprite is a good idea and the tilemap solves that but it will not accept prefabs. The only way I know how to add a normal map to a sprite is to attach a material to it with the normal map on it.

So upon further investigation you cannot add a prefab to the tile pallet. You can however apply the normal map to the tiles painted with the pallet in the scene view. Then the normal map will apply to that tile and all other instances of that tile in the tile map.
